Well let’s first say what it is NOT, Hypnotherapy is not Stage Hypnosis often seen on TV or in a live show, so there’s no chance that you will be walking around doing the funky chicken. Hypnotherapy is not mind control. A common misconception is that clients under hypnosis cannot react, and that therefore the hypnotherapist has ultimate control over the individual. Hypnotherapists are not able to make you do things that you would not want to do or that would go against your ethics and values. You are able and fully capable of reacting and making decisions at any time.
Hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and talking therapy. Hypnosis can be described as a natural state – a trance, that we are all entering in and out of many times during the day. It can be said that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. We all enter hypnosis by ourselves and of our own free will, the role of the hypnotherapist is to facilitate and guide us.
When working with you, I will be working with four stages of consciousness: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta brain waves.
Beta wave is normal waking consciousness, in this wave your brain is fully functional and in an alert state. It is paying attention to, and processing stimuli from the outside world. This is the wave you are in whilst we are talking.
During Hypnosis, you will move into alpha waves these waves are slowed down slightly so therefore you will be more focused and able to dedicate your train of thought to one thing. Alpha is like the state you are in when you are say driving your car, you arrive at your destination and then, think how did I get here. In this wave the outside stimuli play a lesser role. At first, you may be aware of things going off around you, after a while, your attention shifts to what is happening directly in front of you. Alpha is a “not-really-here, not-really-out-of-it” state. You can still hear everything but in this state, you will be focussed on my voice.
This is when you able to receive habit/behaviour-altering suggestions, that will assist in the changes you want to make.
Some people go deeper than Alpha into Theta or Delta waves, and most people will transition between Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta during the session. Some people will never reach Theta or Delta, regardless of what I say or do.
It's important to remember that we are all individual, so any combination of waves is all normal
